The clock's movement activates the bellows to send a puff of air into each pipe alternately when the timekeeper strikes. The weights are made of cast iron usually in a pine cone shape and the "cuckoo" sound is created by two tiny gedackt pipes in the clock, with bellows attached to their tops. Today's cuckoo clocks are almost always weight driven. Musical cuckoo clocks frequently have other automata which move when the music box plays. Usually the melody sounds only at full hours in eight-day clocks and both at full and half hours in the one-day timepieces. Some have musical devices, and play a tune on a Swiss music box after striking the hours and half-hours. There are two kinds of movements: one-day (30-hour) and eight-day clockworks. The cuckoo bird is activated by the clock movement as the clock strikes by means of an arm that is triggered on the hour and half hour. They have an automaton of a bird that appears through a small trap door when the clock strikes. The classical or traditional type includes two subgroups the carved ones, whose wooden cases are decorated with leaves, animals, etc., and a second one with cases in the shape of a chalet. Many are made in the "traditional style", which are made to hang on a wall. The design of a cuckoo clock is now conventional. Right: Quartz cuckoo clock with automaton striking eight. Left: Mechanical cuckoo clock in the Bahnhäusle style. It has become a cultural icon of Germany. Today, the cuckoo clock is one of the favourite souvenirs of travellers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It is thought that much of its development and evolution was made in the Black Forest area in southwestern Germany (in the modern state of Baden-Württemberg), the region where the cuckoo clock was popularized and from where it was exported to the rest of the world, becoming world-famous from the mid-1850s on. It is unknown who invented the cuckoo clock and where the first one was made. The mechanism to produce the cuckoo call has been in use since the middle of the 18th century and has remained almost without variation. Some move their wings and open and close their beaks while leaning forwards, whereas others have only the bird's body leaning forward. 2006-013Ī cuckoo clock is a type of clock, typically pendulum driven, that strikes the hours with a sound like a common cuckoo call and has an automated cuckoo bird that moves with each note. Place a piece of parchment on top of it, and use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to approximately ⅛ inch thick. The dough may be a little crumbly - that is ok! Mound it together on a piece of parchment paper and shape it as best you can into a rectangle or oval. I therefore like to mix the dry ingredients in by hand and follow up with a quick run in the mixer, if necessary. You can use the mixer, but you want to be careful not to overmix the dough once the flour is added, as you risk over-developing the gluten, which will result in a less than satisfying cookie. Add the milk and mix until fully incorporated. Mix in the Yolks and MilkĪdd one yolk at a time, mixing until fully incorporated before adding the second one. I suspect it makes no material difference though. I just like to get the butter and sugar going on their own before I add the zest. You can certainly add the zest in the beginning. About half way through, add in the orange zest. It will take a good 5 minutes to get the two ingredients creamed together, meaning that it is light and fluffy. A stand mixer will be faster than a hand mixer. This is easily accomplished with an electric mixer. Give them a light whisk too to make sure the ingredients are well combined. Sifting the dry ingredients lightly aerates them, contributing to the crumb of the cookies. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. The dough for this recipe is adapted from The International Culinary Center’s Lunette Cookies, which are traditional, oval shaped cookies with two holes in the top cookie exposing the jam and looking like spectacles. I have been craving those hamantaschen for months, which is probably why my mind thought to make a holiday Linzer cookie based on similar flavors. This Fig Linzer Cookie recipe is actually based on my Fig Hamantaschen. Also, the cookie cutters I bought are called Chanukkah Linzer Cookie Cutters, so I just went with it. This recipe has no almond and no jam, but I kept the name Linzer to denote the sandwich type of cookie. They are inspired by the Linzer tart which, traditionally is made from an almond crust, filled with raspberry, and topped with a lattice. Technically speaking, Linzer cookies are an Austrian cookie where the cookies are made with almond flour and filled with raspberry jam. Fun cookies to make and even more fun to eat! The orange-spice cookies complement the outrageously delicious fig filling! What are Linzer Cookies? Remember though, this recipe can be used for any holiday or occasion with any variety of cookie cutter shapes. So, we usually have potato latkes (pancakes) or donuts - not baked, of course! Although not traditional, I decided to take the usual sugar cookie up a notch with these Fig Linzer Cookies. For Hanukkah, we usually have foods that involve oil to commemorate the miracle of the holiday - that oil that was supposed to last one day actually lasted eight days. That’s probably because cookies are not really a Hanukkah thing. For more information, please visit my Privacy Policy.īrainstorming for a new Hanukkah cookie concept is not the easiest task. Drupal CMS is a free open source content management system developed using PHP as a programming language. And it sounds comically lame, sort of like “glug glug.” To my ears hot tub is to spa as jalopy is to car. Etymologically speaking, it’s based on the town of Spa, Belgium, which is famous for its natural hot springs.īy contrast, hot tub is an antiquated term that originated in the early 70s counter culture to describe halved wine barrels filled with still hot water used by hippies and swingers. It’s one beautiful syllable that immediately invokes pleasure. Here we have a term “spa” that sounds like “ahhh” – the feeling you have when you lower your body into the warm soothing waters. Never mind that words are allowed to have more than one meaning.ĭespite that rationale, hearing the term hot tub still makes me ill, as in a legionella outbreak. We all now bow to the tyranny of internet clicks. It’s bad SEO, which has become something of a modern communication doctrine if not a quasi-religion. “hot tub.” The rationale for using hot tub is simply that a spa conflicts with “day spa” or “pampering spa” in internet searches. Vanishing edge is less used, but far more adroitly descriptive.Įqually frustrating, although somewhat less mystifying is “spa” v. For my small part, I cringe every time I hear or read it and resist using it in print or in conversation. Yet, that’s the term that’s most commonly used. (I suspect we have the Toy Story movies to blame for that.) It’s a fantasy reference that’s indulged because people like the word infinity. First of all, we know there’s no such thing as an infinite body of water, or an infinite edge. My reaction: what a steaming load of bunkum, falderal, jibber jabber and utter nonsense. It’s been explained to me that it means the water appears to go on into infinity. And it sounds super cool, like a slight-of-hand magic trick.īy stark contrast, infinity edge has no actual attachment to reality, but instead is purely hyperbolic. The water quite literally vanishes over the edge and when used on a water-on-water view application, the edge itself vanishes from sight. I’ve long felt that vanishing edge is the far superior and more descriptive way to describe this most iconic of watershaping features. Frankly, are there really and truly any such things as a “non-interactive water features”? Isn’t simply looking at a fountain, pond or stream not meant for human immersion also a form of interaction? Point being, it’s a very fuzzy term.įor all my passion and years in a position of communicative high exposure and influence, I must admit that I have thoroughly lost the language wars on two fronts, despite years of advocacy for terms that I’m convinced best fit the features they are describing.įirst, there’s “vanishing edge” v. Consider the term “interactive water feature” – it’s imprecise to the point of nonsensicality. The references are crystal clear.īut we also have many terms that are far, far less effective. The same is true of laminar jet, beach entry or diving board. That’s especially true in the world of watershaping where much of our terminology has always been rather imprecise and even dubious.Įxamples: When we say “competition pool” or “racing pool” the meaning is immediately understood, requires no further explanation or clarification. The terms we use have the power to create an immediate understanding based on shared references. Working as a writer/editor, I’ve always deeply cared about the language we use to describe things.
